Excerpt from Speech of Stanley Matthews of Athens, Ohio, August 25, 1877, on Political Questions
Fellow-Citizens:
The present political contest in this State opens upon its people in circumstances of unusual interest, and opens to discussion many questions of unusual gravity. Some of them are invested with the attraction of novelty; some of them, if not altogether new, acquire new importance in consequence of new relations and new applications; some are more familiar, but not, on that account, trite and hackneyed, while others require us to consider the administration of our Governments, State and National - not in the aspect of party interests and divisions, but penetrating below the surface of ordinary political debate, to explore principles which lie at the foundation of government itself, the explanation of which is to be sought in the solutions of social philosophy.
Let it not be said that themes so profound and momentous are unfit for popular discussion; that such issues are incapable of settlement by the popular judgment. The human mind is master of human destiny. The necessity of thought and action is upon the race. There is no tribunal but human reason for the solution of the problems of life, and it is the educated reason of mankind which corrects by cancellation the aberrations of conflicting and contradictory interests adverse to truth, and which constitutes the philosophy of common sense, that harnesses together, in equal speed, the original and divine wisdom of individual genius and the acquired wisdom of common experience, and drives the triumphant chariot of human progress, with smoking wheels, to the goal of a perfected social life.
