This volume is an attempt to state in simple, popular, and untechnical language the essentials of the Socialism of the Marxian school. I have tried to present a clear and comprehensive view not only of the philosophical and economic theories of Socialism, but of the principles underlying the policies of the Socialist movement.
In justice to the reader as well as to the writer, it should be stated that these pages were written prior to the outbreak of the European war. I was at the time a member of the National Executive Committee of the Socialist Party, and by invitation of the General Committee of the party organization in New York City I delivered a course of ten lectures which were designed to assist in the education of the party membership.
