After the American Civil War, the U.S. government had to determine the best way not just to rebuild the South but also to unify Southern society with Northern society. This included a wide range of governmental decisions and oversight, forcing the South to change their policies towards the newly freed slaves that made the majority of the population of the South. With the assassination of Lincoln, the Reconstruction fell upon his successor, Andrew Johnson who was a Southern sympathizer and had very different views than his predecessor on Reconstruction policies and the role of the U.S. government in Southern affairs. The failings of Johnson and the U.S. government during this period of American history made Reconstruction stand out as one of the darker periods in U.S. history.
