The division of Africa into separate economic zones is not susceptible of exact demarcation for the same reason that it would be impossible to draw a precise dividing line in Asia between the agricultural and pastoral regions, or in North America between the cotton and wheat belts. Nevertheless these different areas, when looked at broadly, reveal very distinct characteristics and exercise a profound and determining influence upon the social and psychological life of the people.
