Excerpt from The Treasury of Devotion: A Manual of Prayer for General and Daily Use
To the loving care and unsparing diligence of a Priest who desires to withhold his name, we are indebted for this, as the Editor believes, very important addition to the series of our devotional Manuals. The difficulty of course in such a work, is to select out of the mass of materials what is likely to be adapted to many different minds under many varying circumstances; and arrange what is selected in the order most easily followed in familiar use. Such use only can be a real test of its success. But the greatest care has been bestowed in aiming at the desired result.
For the ordinary daily devotions as great variety has-been given as the compass of the work admitted; and in the case of special devotions, where doubt was felt as to their introduction, the rule observed has been to adopt such as are found in the greater number of manuals, as being a guarantee of their popularity. In all important cases where the devotions are derived from ancient sources, the translation has been carefully compared with the original.
