The group of musicians brought together after Charles the Seconds restoration by the singer known as "Captain" Henry Cooke is interesting both for the musician and the sociologist.
It included the most famous and representative English composers of the time, its youngest member being Henry Purcell; and the history of these musicians, of their surroundings, their life and their work, helps to explain that sudden and ephemeral development of music in England, which seems at first sight almost paradoxical.
With the twofold object of shedding some light on the sociological problem and at the same time of making known a work which is now unjustly forgotten, we shall devote our attention to Cooke and his pupils, leaving aside Henry Purcell, and limiting ourselves almost entirely to their secular music.
Purcell is now pretty well known, thanks to the beautiful edition published by the Purcell Society. Comments on his compositions are not lacking, and if any new work were undertaken on such a subject it were well worth a monograph. Moreover, Purcell is less a pupil of Cooke's than of his oldest pupils, although he worked for some eight years under him, and his precociousness shows his early training was of no small importance. He was only fourteen when the master died, and profited more by the teaching of Humfrey and Blow.
