The evolution of a technique for the prevention of external wound infection, great as was its effect in extending the scope of surgical methods of treatment in general, did not lead directly to any considerable expansion of the surgery of the chest. Though Lister had removed the obstacles to the exploration of the abdomen, the joints and the brain, and given thereby an immense impetus to the effective study of diseases in these regions, the chest remained guarded from any but the most trivial or the most desperate surgical intrusions by essential physiological conditions.
