In presenting to the profession the present volume, which completes their work on the Surgery of the Upper Abdomen, the authors desire to express their high appreciation of the very cordial and favorable manner in which the first volume has been received.
That an interval of more than four years has elapsed since the publication of the first volume is to be explained by the great mass of literature, not only recent, but also in a sense classical, which it is necessary for anyone to peruse who wishes to be thoroughly informed on the surgery of the gall-bladder, liver, pancreas and spleen. It has been the endeavor of the authors to supplement in this way their personal experience; and they believe they are thus enabled to furnish their professional brethren with what they hope may be regarded as authoritative sources of information and opinions which may be said to represent the crystallization of the views at present held in these important departments of surgery.
The authors have to thank Dr. A.D. Whiting for his very painstaking and accurate work in compiling the statistics derived from patients operated on at the German Hospital; for valuable criticism and assistance in the preparation of the text; and for the preparation of the index. Their thanks are due to Dr. J. R.
