Excerpt from Christian Ethics: A Textbook of Right Living
This is a textbook in Ethics. It is not a treatise or extended discussion. The remarks, therefore, on any one point are necessarily brief. All the questions raised in a complete survey of the field could not be thoroughly handled in a dozen volumes of this size. The aim has been rather to cover a wide field, giving sound principles, than to go into a few points with detail. For those classes which have the time, a more extensive study can be made through the references and suggested readings.
The sub-title of the book, "A Textbook in Right Living," indicates the spirit in which it is conceived. It is intended to be a guide for real life. Herein are given principles which if rightly applied will make the students earnest, self-respecting citizens of the State and of the kingdom of God. And the attempt has been made to be concrete. Principles are applied to specific cases by way of illustration.
"Christian Ethics" is intended for Catholic schools. The principles are in all cases soundly Catholic, and the references are largely to Catholic works. It has been deemed advisable, however, to add references to the best non-Catholic treatises in many cases. Because of its aim, no very hard and fast line has been drawn between mere reason and revelation.
The method suggested for teaching is the Socratic or discussional group method. It is thought that this makes the subject more interesting to the pupils and stimulates greater reflection on their part. For instance, when first taking up the question of suicide the teacher might ask whether suicide is wrong. Naturally the answer will be, Yes. Then the teacher can ask for a definition of suicide. Usually it will be given, The taking of one's own life.
