Excerpt from The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
The editor of a, monthly periodical once desired a short article on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. To write it seemed an easy task, for long wanderings in the Orient had led me to the sites of several of these ancient marvels, yet when I attempted to name them, I could not. Dismayed at my ignorance, I asked my learned friends to name them; they succeeded no better. I consulted the encyclop?dias only to find that some of the ancient wonders were not considered worthy of a brief descriptive paragraph; the information given of others was meagre and antiquated. Confident that scores of authors must have been inspired to write books about them, I searched through the largest of the libraries. The discovery of two books was the reward.
