Excerpt from Hymn-Tunes and Their Story
Considering the general popularity of hymn-tunes, and also the fact that they provide a form of music which all can understand and in which all can take a part, it is rather remarkable that no attempt has yet been made to give some account of their history in a connected narrative. A great deal of work has been done in this direction by various diligent students, entailing a vast amount of original work and research, and it seems a great pity that the results of their labours should be hidden away in magazines and papers extending over a considerable number of years, and many of which are now inaccessible. The numerous inquiries that appear from time to time in the various newspapers and periodicals seem to show that a widespread interest is taken in the history of our tunes, and it is hoped that this first attempt to provide material for such a history will prove acceptable.
