Excerpt from Treatise on the Steam Engine
The second edition of the "Treatise on the Steam Engine," has been carefully revised, and many parts of it have been either re-written or much extended. Since the publication of the first edition, great improvements have taken place in the manner of using steam, and in two of its most important applications. The expansive action of steam, which was employed only in a few boats on the Hudson, has received a development in practice fully equal to what the author, had anticipated, while the value of this mode action has been illustrated by the publication of its results in the pumping engines of Cornwall. The views of the author in respect to the defects of the existing theory of the motion of steam vessels have been confirmed, and new illustrations, derived from actual experiment, have been given in their proper place. The navigation of the ocean by steam, the practicability of which was denied by many, has been proved to be safe and certain. Finally, the use of steam in locomotion, which in 1830 was little more than in embryo, has been much extended and improved.
