Excerpt from The Surgical Diseases of Children
I have long designed to lay before the Profession some remarks upon those affections of children - that is, of patients under puberty - the care of which comes within the province of the surgeon. The absence of any work in the English language devoted to this subject seems to render it not inappropriate for those who, like myself, have been largely engaged in the treatment of this class of diseases, to make public the results of their experience. Into the surgical wards of Guy's Hospital more than three hundred children are annually admitted; and at the Royal Infirmary for Children a very large number of similar patients have for many years come under my care. To treat these cases practically is one thing; to write a book upon the subject is quite another. I must, therefore, beg the reader's indulgence for any deficiencies or errors which may have found their way into this volume. One thing, however, I may promise - the entire matter of it is original. The work contains the results of my own experience.
