Excerpt from The Laws of Heredity
In the study of nature and natural phenomena, from the humblest plant and tiniest infusoria to the giants of the forest and man himself, we learn what the unaided Bible and religion has never been able to teach us, that whereas this world has been in verity a "vale of tears," its ultimate design was for a very Paradise of joy.
We find, then, in our studies of this vast universe, that, from the highest to the lowest, all things have a design of marvelous perfection, and are governed by laws that admit of "no variation nor shadow of turning." We find, also, that what has been called "sin" and "evil," with their concomitants, the sorrows, darkness and miseries of life, have been born of want of conformity to pre-existing laws, and cradled and nurtured in perpetual disobedience.
