Of all the folk-literature adapted for children, none is more richly imaginative, warm in colour, and full of varied adventures than the "Arabian Nights" Entertainments," for which reason a volume of selections from the same should be in every child"s own library.
This edition of selected tales edited for young people is based on the version of the Oriental scholar, Edward William Lane. His translation from the Cario text, although it is the standard, classic household version for adults, may not be given unexpurgated to children as it contains much that is unfit for them to read. It has, however, great educational values, the chief of which lie in its epic treatment, so characteristic of primitive people, in its thrilling adventures, related with convincing people; in its thrilling adventures, related with convincing details, and in its dignified style, resembling that of Bible narrative. Its educational values are increased by Lane"s painting, as with a large, free bush, desert scenes, and life in the great Oriental cities, and in his depicting Eastern customs and religious beliefs which control the "faithful" Mohammedan"s daily actions.
