Excerpt from The School: An Introduction to the Study of Education
I am grateful to the American publishers of this volume for affording me space to write a word of greeting to my many friends among teachers in the United States. More than one of these chapters (as well as the bibliography) testify to the help my mind has received from the writings of my confreres over the water, and from the visits I have made to colleges and schools in the United States during the last twenty years. I believe that, while in other branches of science the old countries have advantages over the new, simply because we are old, the case is reversed as regards pedagogy. The reader will readily discover the grounds for this opinion if he peruse Chapter V. I have, therefore, in writing this book, always had in mind readers in the New World as much as readers in the Old World. And in the United States, especially, where the formal study of Education has spread with such extraordinary rapidity since the "nineties, I am convinced that teachers are ready for such a systematic presentment of our professional work as is attempted in these chapters. I have tried to kill two birds with one stone.
