The Dream Light presents a horrifying scenario where the last forty years of history have been altered into a world where a young, charismatic, religious leader named Martin Reeves rises to worldwide acclaim and adoration. The public is unaware that this charming and multi-talented young man is in fact a demented deviant obsessed with a single-minded objective, which is to destroy as much of humanity as possible. The story begins in 1971 with a series of murders committed by "Marty" as he pretends to offer spiritual counseling to troubled teenagers. Using his unholy powers of deceit and manipulation, he makes certain his friend is convicted of the killings and uses the trial to propel himself into the national spotlight. By the early 1980"s he has altered history and uses his massive popularity to manipulate the American public into electing an independent presidential candidate named Benjamin Reynolds, who is in fact a puppet. Through a series of devious plots, Martin Reeves becomes president in 1989 and secretly orchestrates poverty and terror while eliminating personal wealth and freedom as he systematically murders anyone who might be a threat to his goal of ultimate power. Much of the story is told from the perspective of Price Connor, who had once been the boyhood friend of Martin Reeves. The 16-year-old is awakened by a beautiful glowing light reflecting from the high clouds onto his suburban neighborhood. As several friends join him on that fateful night in 1971, they realize the dream light alters time and space. Then Price is taken up into the light and joined with his future self, an old derelict devoid of hope and living in an age of misery.
