The third of Charles Dickens"s Christmas Books was, and is, by many considered his best, the introduction of the Cricket being in every way so happy and the various characters so well defined. Gruff and Tackleton, the Peerybingles, Caleb Plummer and his Blind Daughter, Tilly Slowboy - all are in the best Dickensian tradition. The title came through Dickens"s predilection for journalism as a profession. He had, in early years of struggle, been a journalist of the mechanical order. Why not, in the days of success, be a journalist of the publicist and really influential type? Hence the idea which ultimately culminated in the foundation of the Daily News was often in his mind, and we find him writing to Forster at the beginning of 1845 suggesting the possibility of a weekly newspaper given over to reviews of books, theatrical criticism, "notices of all good things, notices of all bad ones, "Carol" philosophy, cheerful views, sharp anatomisation of humbug, jolly good temper...becoming reference in everything to Home and Fireside. And I would call it, sir, "The Cricket.""
