My wife and I decided to walk away from corporate America for a log home in the north woods of Canada. This book is about choosing an alternative way to live. There are many reasons why you may choose this lifestyle. Like us, you may feel that the work-a-day world, or as we refer to it, the cuckoo’s nest, is not a satisfying way to spend your finite lifetime. You may be forced to look at an alternative lifestyle because of ongoing changes to the economy. Perhaps you are motivated by changes that are going on in the natural world. Maybe the geopolitical arena has caused you to be apprehensive of your current situation. Whatever your reason for reading this book, this choice of lifestyle is an option that you may want to consider. This book looks at the current economic and social reality that helped us realize a more independent lifestyle would serve us well. It covers our strategies as we moved from red wings to wing tips to mucalucs. It explores the benefits of being at least a little independent in the potentially much different future many North Americans may be facing. We look at our personal and economic reasons for making this change and our strategies for saving enough to leave and to retire early. We share our adventures while searching for land, immigrating to Canada, and building a unique log home. The book shows how we started and tend a large garden with a 60 year old tractor and we teach our methods and recipes to add value to the products we grow. We now live very well, on less than 25% of our former income, using 10% of our previous carbon footprint. The book includes some hilarious commentary on the things that were not so perfect. Things like traveling 1200 miles cross-country only to pull into our driveway and bury the packed U-Haul up to the axle, in the middle of no-where’s ville. Living with black flies or better known as Steven King’s “Langoliers” by my wife. Of course we include all the delightful issues associated with log homes and long abandoned homesteads.
