Many centuries in the past, an earthquake and tidal wave sent the city of Ekonia to the sea floor. In the chaos after the destruction, a messenger from Water took a purple gemstone trident to a small group of survivors with instructions to teach them how it could help them adjust to their new underwater home. Before the messenger can complete his task, he is captured and taken away by a flesh-eating shape shifter. Before another messenger can take his place, the survivors--and the trident--disappear. Cautioned to watch for danger in the ruins, Archer and Aradia travel to the city"s debris on the sea floor to attempt to solve this ancient mystery. They find and enter the shape shifter"s lair and barely escape its trap when Aradia recognizes the danger and transports them to the survivors" last known resting place, a field of black boulders. Before Archer and Aradia can search for clues in the new location, a whirlpool carries them into a maze of caverns beneath the sea floor. Archer wakes up with scrapes and bruises in a cave lit with fluorescent rocks and can"t find Aradia. He calls until Marcoli answers and tells him that Aradia is unconscious in the cave above him and a dragon is approaching her location. Archer finds Aradia in time to stop the dragon by placing a force field shield across the entry tunnel unaware that more danger lurks in these hidden caverns beneath the sea floor. Half-starved Ichonauts caught by the whirling waters in the long ago past find them and escort them into the lost kingdom of My Ekonia. Queen Kara makes it clear she will not tolerate intruders but rapidly discovers she has underestimated the skills of these new arrivals to her kingdom. No matter what they try, Queen Kara"s animosity continues to thwart Archer and Aradia"s attempts to free her and her people from their cavern prison until Aradia is forced to use her crystal charm to call for help.
