Madame Emma Azalia Hackley (1867-1922) was an African American classical singer, social worker, writer, philanthropist, and activist who championed the use of African-American spirituals among the African-American people as a tool for social change. Hackley was active in black Denver"s civic and social life. She founded the Colored Women"s League and served as executive director of its local branch.
